Join Columbia Children’s Theatre (CCT) January 28-30 for its musical production of Peter and The Starcatcher! This Tony award-winning production upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan).
A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher in-training who realizes the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful it must never fall into the wrong hands.
When the ship is taken over by pirates—led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own—the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair…and the bonds of friendship, duty, and love.
The production is dual cast, with the Jolly cast performing January 28 at 2 and 7 p.m., and the Roger cast performing January 29 at 7 p.m. and January 30 at 3 p.m. at Columbia Children’s Theatre, 3400 Forest Drive.
The show is directed by CCT’s Julian Deleon. “This is not a typical play,” says Deleon. “This show is filled with practical instrumentation for sound effects and quick musical stings. It’s a really unique experience.”
Peter and the Starcatcher marks the debut performance of CCT’s Entr’acte Ensemble. Part of the theatre’s YouTheatre program, the Entr’acte Ensemble features performers in grades six through eight. Created in 2009, YouTheatre has trained thousands of young performers in Columbia and continues to provide unparalleled instruction to the city’s youth.
“ We’re thrilled to have the Entr’acte Ensemble debuting its first show,” says CCT Artistic Director Jerry Stevenson. “As the theatre continues to grow, we’ve had to divide the YouTheatre program a few times, and this newest group is really giving our middle-school performers the chance to shine.”
General admission tickets are $10 and $8 for active military and seniors with proper ID. Advance tickets are strongly recommended and can be purchased securely online at columbiachildrenstheatre.com. For more information, contact CCT at 803-691-4548.
