Newberry bus route reopened

The Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority has reactivated bus service from Columbia to Newberry, offering a round trip each weekday morning and afternoon.

Five Points now historic area

Columbia’s Five Points neighborhood area near the University of South Carolina is now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Five Points Association announced.

Coldwell named top brokerage

With $1.756 billion in sales, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage ranked as the top residential real estate company in the Columbia area in 2018, according to the 2019 REAL Trends Market Leaders report.

Street cuisine grill opening

Sabor Latin Street Grill is opening at 701 Gervais St. in the former Le Peep location featuring South American street cuisine such as the flavors of Peru, Argentina, and Mexico.

Charlotte CBD shop, Columbia’s first CBD “dispensary” is open in the old American Apparel and Copper Penny space at 610 Harden Street.

Area gym subscriptions available

ClassPass, a monthly gymnasium subscription service, is open in Columbia offering clients the option to workout at multiple facilities in the area.

USC weighing alcohol sales

The Southeastern Conference has given USC permission to sell beer and wine in Williams-Brice Stadium and all its athletic facilities. University leaders say they’re studying the issue carefully.

Election chief terminated

The Richland County Elections and Voter Registration Board has fired its executive director Rokey Suleman after a chaotic half-year in which the elections office failed to count more than 1,000 votes in the November 2018 midterms and the agency’s entire board was fired by the governor in February.

City ranked for summer jobs

Gun violence toll high in S.C.

South Carolina has the 12th highest death rate in the country due to gun violence—and it’s costing the state’s taxpayers more than $293 million a year, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a national policy organization that advocates for stricter gun control measures.

Tomato fest moving to Earlewood

Columbia’s tenth annual Tasty Tomato Festival, which celebrates locally grown food, is moving from City Roots urban farm in Rosewood to Earlewood Park on North Main Street. Admission will be free to the July 13 event.

Lexington 5 schools ranked

Three of Lexington-Richland 5’s four high schools ranked in the top 15 high schools in South Carolina, according to 2019 rankings from U. S. News and World Report. Spring Hill High in Chapin earned the third spot, while Dutch Fork High and Chapin High ranked 12 and 13 spots, respectively.
