Carter set for generous retirement

Lonnie Carter, Santee Cooper’s retiring CEO, will be paid more than $1 million in the first year of his retirement, which follows the abandonment of the V.C. Summer nuclear station. The 58- year-old executive will receive roughly $800,000 annually for the next two decades, then $345,000 yearly for the rest of his life.

Summer work produces bonuses

Top Santee Cooper executives, who led the state-owned utility’s botched effort to construct the V.C. Summer nuclear station, were paid more than $6 million in bonuses since 2011 for their role in the now-mothballed project.

Utility wants to finish reactor project

Georgia Power Company says it wants to finish two nuclear reactors under construction near Waynesboro using the same Westinghouse AP1000 technology employed in the now-defunct V.C. Summer nuclear station in South Carolina.

EdVenture opening Hartsville satellite

Columbia’s EdVenture Children’s Museum is opening a satellite location in Hartsville in 2018. The project will be the museum’s first new satellite location. The Hartsville location will focus on children under eight years old.

Hawaiian eatery opens new location

Poke Bros. “Fresh Fish Hawaiian Style” restaurant is opening another Columbia location at 1211 Lincoln Street in the Vista. The location was previously home to Doubletakes vintage clothing shop.

Blythewood Post office now store

The former Blythewood post office at 130 McNulty Street is now home to Postmarked 29016—a shop selling antique and vintage housewares and decor items and new handmade, one-ofa kind gifts.

New Marriott near hospital

Columbia-based Solara Hospitality has opened the 108-room Residence Inn by Marriott at 122 Mathias Drive off U.S. 378 across from Lexington Medical Center. The four story, 8,700- square-foot, $12 million hotel is designed for stays of five nights or more.

Amazon sued over eclipse glasses

Corey Payne and Kayla Harris of Charleston are suing Amazon in U.S. District Court, claiming they suffered injury to their eyes after using eclipse glasses they bought through the online retailer.

New Taco Bell opening

West Side Plaza, the largest shopping center in West Columbia, is adding a new Taco Bell at its Augusta Road location.
