Walmart offers new pickup feature
Walmart ’s Garner s Ferry Road store is debuting the company’s new Pickup Tower technology. A 16-foot tall structure functions like high-tech vending machines. To use the Pickup Tower, customers submit orders online and retrieve the merchandise by scanning a bar code sent to their smartphone.
S.C. summers ranked tenth
National list website Thrilllist. Com ranks South Carolina 10th out of 50 states for what it calls “miserable summers.” Georgia was ranked sixth and North Carolina came in at 31st. Mississippi was ranked 50th and Washington first.
Cooper Library reopening July 19
The newly renovated Richland Library Cooper is reopening Wednesday, July 19 at 5317 Trenholm Road. The grand re-opening ceremony will run from 10 a.m. until noon.
Womble Carlyle moving
The Womble Carlyle law firm has moved to Suite 1600 in the NBSC Building at 1221 Main Street. The firm’s office previously was located in the historic Preston Lorick House at 1727 Hampton Street.

Bojangles is closing its oldest Lexington location at 461 Columbia Avenue. The company says a new restaurant is planned nearby on Sunset Boulevard.
Chicken plant gets new crosswalk
The City of West Columbia has completed the installation of a pedestrian crosswalk on Sunset Boulevard in front of the House of Raeford. The project was made possible with an award from Lexington County C-Funds and matching funds from House of Raeford.
S.C. coast reopened for drilling
President Donald Trump has formally reopened Atlantic waters to leasing for oil and natural gas drilling — areas that were closed by the Obama administration after a massive outcry from coastal residents and businesses. Trump ordered the process to begin for issuing leases for 2023-27.
SCE&G wants to sell site
South Carolina Electric & Gas is asking the S.C. Public Service Commission to approve the sale of a 24-acre former utility operations center on Shakespeare Road in Columbia. The property, valued at about $1.4 million, consists of 14 buildings of primarily office and warehouse space, totaling 90,000 square feet.
Volvo switching to electric models
Volvo Cars, which is building a new U.S. car plant near Ridgeville, says it will produce solely electric or hybrid models as of 2019, meaning it will phase out production of vehicles with only internal combustion engines. Elsewhere, France plans to end the sale of gasoline and diesel- powered vehicles by 2040, Energy Minister Nicolas Hulot says.
Software companies getting grants
Upstate software companies ActivEd and PursuitAlert received S.C. Launch investments of $200,000 and $50,000 respectively through the South Carolina Research Authority. Pursuit- Alert is a smart phone app that alerts the public of nearby police pursuits. ActivEd is an online tool to help educators find ways to incorporate physical activity into lesson plans.
Knapheide opening new plant
Knapheide Manufacturing Co. is opening a $ 1.3 million North Charleston facility that will produce van interiors and bodies for the new Mercedes-Benz plant nearby. No opening date was provided for the facility that will create 63 jobs.
Two solar farms in works
The S. C. Department of Commerce says Charleston-based Southern Current is building a$ 2.5 million solar farm in Hampton County while Pine Gate Renewables, based in Charlotte, is launching a $ 7.5 million solar farm in Dillon County.
