Choirs of Carolina join forces for First Thursday event





The University of South Carolina’s premier choral ensemble, the USC Concert Choir, and USC’s largest choral ensemble, University Chorus, will present a joint concert Thursday, February 5 in conjunction with the citywide First Thursday on Main event.

The free concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Main Street Methodist Church, 1830 Main Street.

Hear what the USC Concert Choir will be performing in Austria, Czech Republic, and Germany this spring with a preview of the program—selections by composers from each country, Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Schutz. The Concert Choir program also includes selections by African-American composers.The University Chorus will feature a program of African-American composers Jeffery Ames, Andre Thomas, and Harry T. Burleigh that includes traditional spiritual settings and gospel songs, as well as works in other styles.

The University of South Carolina’s choral area offers seven diverse ensembles, performing in musical styles ranging from Renaissance to recent compositions, jazz, and gospel. Ensembles are made up of doctoral and masters’ candidates, and undergraduates.

Dr. Larry Wyatt, director of choral studies at USC, directs the USC Concert Choir, which has performed in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and abroad in Italy, Spain, Austria, Czech Republic, and China.

Dr. Alicia Walker, associate director of choral studies, directs the University Chorus. The ensemble’s concerts feature the finest choral masterworks and compositions by current composers, as well as folk song settings from around the world.
