There was no shortage of excitement from Brookland-Cayce football fans Friday night as they celebrated the Bearcats 32- 14 win over the Airport Eagles. It was Brookland- Cayce’s third straight win over Airport and head coach Rusty Charpia’s sixth win overall against the Eagles.
Rusty’s son Reed has been at the helm of the Bearcats’ offense the last three games against Airport. The younger Charpia had a big game against the Eagles, which included a game-clinching 15-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes.
The win improved Brookland-Cayce’s overall record to 2-0. The good start is even more important with trips to Spring Valley and Newberry, along with a visit from Irmo on the schedule. To add to the difficulty is the Bearcats’ move to 4A as part of the high school league’s realignment. Despite the opponents, Reed said it didn’t impact him or his teammates this offseason.
Reed has played a big role in Brookland-Cayce’s start. He has completed 33- of-45 passes for 441 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Charpia has rushed 18 times for 52 yards and five touchdowns.
The senior quarterback has also been important to a program that has won 21 games the last two years, including a region title and an appearance in the 3A semifinals in 2016.
Friday’s win over Airport was important for a lot of reasons for Brookland Cayce fans. While it was the third in a row, it was also the Bearcats fifth win in its last six matchups against Airport, a change in a series that was dominated by the Eagles for a while.
The 2-0 start has shown that despite the move into 4A, which will bring on stiffer competition, Brookland-Cayce is able to hold its own. Along with the win at Airport, the Bearcats outlasted White Knoll in the opening week 42-35.
