Carolina Idol goes on trial for running over pizza delivery man

Middle schools across the Midlands will compete in the South Carolina Bar Regional Middle School Mock Trial Competition Saturday, November 18, at the University of South Carolina School of Law.

The competition will begin at 9 am. The law school is located at 701 S. Main St. in Columbia.

Participating schools include Andrew Jackson Middle School (Kershaw), Blythewood Middle School (Blythewood), Chapin Middle School (Chapin), Crayton Middle School (Columbia), Dutch Fork Middle School (Irmo), E.L. Wright Middle School (Columbia), Hand Middle School (Columbia), Heathwood Hall Episcopal School (Columbia), Paul Knox Middle School (N. Augusta), Sandhills Middle School (Gaston), Southeast Middle School (Hopkins), St. Joseph Catholic School (Columbia), Timmerman School (Co-lumbia) and W.G. Sanders Middle School (Columbia). To view a complete student roster of the Midlands mock trial competitors, visit www.scbar.org/news/msmtrosters.asp.

Students will present the plaintiff and defense sides of a fictitious case before a panel of local volunteer lawyers. Additionally, students will fill the roles of defendant, witnesses and bailiff. Each team will be judged on its presentation skills rather than the legal merits of the case.

This year students will argue a collision case. Carolina Idol C.J. Lewis was driving back to his hotel after performing in his hometown of Abbeville when he struck and seriously injured a pizza delivery man. The sheriff who arrived at the scene and filed the incident report is out of the country, so it is up to a jury to decide who is at fault for the collision and liable for damages.

Regional competitions are also being held in the Coastal, Pee Dee, Piedmont and Lowcountry areas of the state. Two qualifying teams from each region will advance to the state competition Saturday, December 2, at the Marc Westbrook Judicial Center in Lexington.

The mock trial program is sponsored by the South Carolina Bar’s Law Related Education (LRE) Division, which was established in 1976 to improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education.

The mock trial program is made possible through an IOLTA grant from the South Carolina Bar Foundation.

The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 11,500 lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law.
