Cardinals shut out Skyhawks

Cardinal Newman got a first half goal from Andres Compo and a second half goal from Duncan Wilson to earn a 2-nil win over the Hammond Skyhawks Friday, March 24.

Cardinal Newman controlled the possession from the start. In the second minute, Somto Okoye’s shot hit off the post. In the 17th minute, Owen Thompson tried to put the Cardinals on the board, but his shot attempt sailed over the goal.

Thompson and Wilson made attempts later in the match, but their shots were turned away.

Then in the 25th minute, Adam Trimmier sent a cross into the Hammond box. The ball was deflected by a Skyhawk defender right to Campo, who blasted a shot past Hammond’s keeper Cal McQueen to put Cardinal Newman ahead 1-nil at halftime.

Then in the opening minute of the second half, Wilson scored a goal to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 2-nil.

“We started the second half with an unbelievable team goal to run a play that came from the training ground,” Eudy said. “It was a lot of the patterns we have worked on and Duncan had a really good finish. He got challenged at halftime pretty hard. He responded well.

“We talked at halftime about keeping it off the kickoff and going straight away. We did that, and it opened up well. We played a ball, someone ran off of it, it allowed Duncan to come in behind it, and he did what he does by finishing it. It was unfortunate we didn’t get a third or fourth. They played well. They were hard to break down. I’m happy with the performance.”

While Hammond had very few shots on goal, its best opportunity came in the 77th minute when Franz Grimm had a look. However, his shot sailed over preserving the Cardinal Newman lead..

“It’s important, but it’s done now,” Eudy said. “It’s on to the next one. Last year we came in on fire and won 4-1. Then we went back to our place and kicked a ball to their center forward and lose 1-0. We have to stay focused and do what we do. It’s a good win. They’re really organized and well coached. We have to keep going and do what we do. We have to score more goals. I’m happy with how we managed the game.”

Cardinal Newman improves to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in SCISA Region 1-4A.

Hammond falls to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in region.
