The Cardinal Newman Cardinals (6-10, 1-1) held the visiting Heathwood Hall Highlanders (7-7, 1-2) scoreless the first 10 minutes of their SCISA Region I-3A contest Tuesday, January 11 en route to a 50-28 win.
The Highlanders went 0-for-8 with seven turnovers during that stretch and could never fully recover.
“We were able to get back in the gym yesterday and went through a lot of that,” Cardinal Newman head coach Philip Deter said of his team’s defensive preparation. “I had some time during practice to sit down, discuss, see what’s going on. We talk about it all the time. You’ve got to play defense in a stance, hands out. Got to be able to guard, keep the ball out of the paint. So we did a good job. We got lucky—left JD (Gardner) open a couple of times, and he happen to miss, which he doesn’t usually do. We fully expect him to be ready to go on Thursday, so we’ve got to do the same thing…probably a little bit better.”
Offensively, the Cardinals knocked down eight 3-pointers, scoring all 12 of their second quarter points from beyond the arch.
“ You know, it’s home. You shoot better at home. That’s why I hardly ever play here,” Deter said with a smile on his face.
Jordan Frazer started the game with a 3-pointer for Cardinal Newman. Cedric Shelby added another later, and after Evan Carter finished the quarter with a drive, the Cardinals led 14-0.
The Highlanders finally got on the board at the 5:43 mark of the second quarter with a jumper from Kaleb Barnes. Cardinal Newman responded with two 3-pointers from Gerald Gary and one each from Shelby and Victor Camps to build a 26-5 advantage. Heathwood got a couple of free throws and another jumper from Barnes to cut the deficit to 26-9 going into the break.
The Cardinals started the third quarter with a coast-to-coast layup and then a fast break from Frazer. Heathwood fought back with a drive from William Morris, a backdoor basket from Gardner, and a 3-pointer from Will Frick, but Cardinal Newman answered with fast break buckets from Josiah Peeples and Gary to go with a layup off an inbounds play from Michael Leonard to lead 36-16 after three.
The Highlanders went on a 6-2 run to start the fourth with all six points coming from Gardner. However, the Cardinals quickly regained control with a drive from Peeples, a three from Christian Martin, and a steal and a jam from Gary to lead 45-22.
Gary led the Cardinals with 12 points. Frazer added nine, and Shelby and Camps finished with eight each. Carter and Peeples had four each, Martin got three, and Leonard had two.
Gardner paced the Highlanders with a game-high 13 points. Morris chipped in five, Barnes and Frick had four each, and Nathaniel Titus finished with two.
The two teams will meet again Thursday, January 13 at Heathwood Hall.
