
Cardinal Newman’s Julia Brooks hits a forehand approach in her No. 5 singles match against Heathwood Hall’s Caroline Bunch.
Fresh off a 7-2 road win over Ben Lippen on September 20, the Cardinal Newman Lady Cardinals hit the road again the next day and downed the Heathwood Hall Lady Highlanders in a 5-4 marathon match at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals improved to 2-1 in SCISA Region I- 3A play and avenged an earlier 6-3 loss to the Lady Highlanders. Heathwood Hall fell to 3-1.
Heathwood Hall No. 1 Kendall Couch downed Mary Kathryn Gillespie 6- 0, 6-0, and Cardinal Newman No. 6 Ashley Maddock beat Kit Mullins 6-1, 6-4 to tie the team standings at 1-1.
Cardinal Newman No. 2 Chloe Narboni defeated Hanna Coetsee 6- 1, 7-5, but Daisy McLeod beat Reagan Hamm 6-2, 6- 2 at No. 3 singles and Olivia Merritt downed Madeline Fallaw 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles to give Heathwood a 3- 2 lead.
The best match of the day came at No. 5 singles where line judges were requested. Cardinal Newman’s Julia Brooks eventually pulled out the 7-5, 7-6 win over Heathwood’s Caroline Bunch. That win tied the overall match at 3-3 and sent it to doubles to determine the victor.

Heathwood’s Couch and Laura McInnis downed Hamm and Canaan Michel 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. The Cardinals bounced back with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles as Gillespie and Narboni beat Bunch and McLeod 8-1.
Brooks then got her second win of the day teaming with Elizabeth Cutler at No. 3 doubles to defeat Mullins and Merritt 8-3 and win the match for Cardinal Newman.
