The Cardinal Newman Cardinals got three players in double figures, eight players eventually into the scorebook, everybody on the roster into the game, and defeated the Heathwood Hall Highlanders 69-19 in a girls’ SCISA basketball matchup on Friday night, February 7, at the Heathwood gym.
The Cardinals flew out to a 29-6 first quarter lead and never looked back as they advanced their record to 19-1 overall and 6-0 in SCISA Region II-3A play. Audrey Meyers led the Cardinals with 19 points. Tanaja Kennedy had 18, and Ashlyn Watkins followed with 13.
The Highlanders fell to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in region play. Adelaide Wood was the Highlanders’ top scorer with five points.
Both teams started emptying their benches in the second half to get everyone some playing time and offensive output fell accordingly. In the fourth quarter, there were only two scores, a three from the Cardinals’ Lakin Green with 3:01 left in the game, and the Highlanders’ Virginia Bowers followed with a layup on the other end.
“I always tell them to work on the little things; work on what we can work on,” Cardinal Newman head coach Molly Moore said later. “It’s especially nice to clear out the bench and give everybody some reps. There is a happy balance you find to keep us ready for the playoffs.”
Meyers is the only senior on the Cards’ roster, and it is safe to say this flock will fly as far as the senior forward will take them.
“Audrey is so consistent,” Moore says. “It is amazing to see her growth from her freshman year to now. I could not be more proud of her; she deserves everything.”
While Meyers and Watkins give the Cards power in the front court, it is pretty useful when freshman guard Kennedy puts up 18 points and sophomore Green adds eight more.
“They make a lot of shots at practice, and it helps when it translates to games,” Moore explains. “They have been playing well, and they want to get out there.”
