The second half saw the Cardinals start to fully pull away. Tanaja Kennedy scored five points in the middle of a 10-1 run over the first half of the quarter, giving Cardinal Newman a 44-20 lead with four minutes remaining in the period. Hammond leaned on Tyra Myers, who scored five of the last seven points of the quarter to trim the deficit to 50-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Cardinal Newman’s bench scored six straight points at the beginning of the fourth quarter to end any hope of a Hammond comeback, stretching the lead to 56-27 before Myers hit another bucket to stem the tide. But Watkins scored the last eight points for the Cardinals to close the game.

Meyers finished with 12 points and Kennedy 11 for the Cardinals, while Tyra Myers scored 16 and Lauren Scott had 12 for the Skyhawks.
