Columbia’s Drequan Goodwin and Nate Miller scored three touchdowns each to lead the Capitals to a 56-6 win over the C.A. Johnson Green Hornets at Memorial Stadium September 1.
Columbia started the game with a five play, 65- yard drive. Miller got the Capitals to the Hornet 7- yard line with a 14-yard run, and then a play later, Goodwin powered in for the game’s first touchdown with 10:34 to play in the first quarter.
Miller struck on the first play of the Capitals’ next possession racing 50 yards for the touchdown and a 12-0 lead with 9:25 left in the first.
Columbia’s defense then got in on the action when William Reed-Simmons took the ball from a Hornet running back and raced 10 yards into the end zone. Goodwin ran in the two-point conversion, and the Capitals led 20-0 with 9:10 still remaining in the first.
C.A. Johnson finally got its offense going driving 32 yards to the Columbia 30-yard line, but a delay of game and a failed fourth-down conversion attempt halted the drive. Seven plays later, Goodwin ran in his second touchdown giving the Capitals a 26-0 advantage with less than a minute left in the first quarter.
The Green Hornets responded with a 35-yard run from Leondress Lowry and a 6-yard run from Deontay Baker to get to the Columbia 11-yard line, but they went backwards from there, and Msonti Chinn’s pass on fourth-and-15 fell incomplete.
The teams then traded punts before the Capitals put together a three-play, 62-yard drive scoring on Puch’s 18-yard pass to Goodwin. Miller ran in the two-point conversion for the 34-0 lead with 4:46 to play in the half.
Things went from bad to worse for C.A. Johnson to start the third quarter when two straight snaps sailed over Chinn’s head, the second going out of the end zone for a safety and a 36-0 Columbia lead.
The Capitals added eight more on the ensuing drive going 56 yards in four plays and scoring on Miller’s 17-yard run. The two-point conversion was successful, and Columbia led 44-0 to start the fourth.
The Green Hornets got on the board to start the final quarter going 74 yards in six plays. Chinn’s completions to Lowry and Rashad Heyward got C.A. Johnson to the Columbia 18-yard line. Then on fourth-and-four, Chinn hit Lowry cutting across the middle for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, and Columbia’s lead was cut to 44-6.
Any momentum the Hornets gained was quickly squashed when Miller took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, and the lead stood at 50-6.
C.A.J.’s Davieon Goodwin then returned the Columbia kickoff to the Capitals’ 6-yard line, but on the second play of the drive Columbia’s Derren Weaver stepped in front of Chinn’s pass and raced 98 yards the other way for the game’s final touchdown.
