The Department of Veterans Affairs announced September 24 nearly $12 million in grants to three South Carolina organizations to help Veterans who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless: Eastern Carolina Homelessness Organization, Inc., $3,060,790; One-Eighty Place, $5,606,266; and Alston Wilkes Society, $3,054,213. Throughout fiscal year 2026, the grants will fund the organizations as they help Veterans access housing and housing counseling, health care, financial planning services, childcare, legal assistance, and transportation.

The University of South Carolina retained its top ranking in international business and is home to the nation’s top first-year student experience among public institutions, according to U.S. News and World Report’s annual undergraduate rankings released September 23. Also in this year’s rankings, the USC College of Nursing continued its rise, jumping 17 spots in the new rankings, with the bachelor of science in nursing degree ranked at No. 22 in the country. The ranking places USC in the top 3 percent of more than 700 nursing schools evaluated by U.S. News, says Jeannette Andrews, dean of the USC College of Nursing. USC’s Columbia campus is ranked No. 63 among public universities and No. 127 overall.

Curing Kids Cancer, a nonprofit organization devoted to funding cutting-edge pediatric cancer therapies, has pledged a historic $5 million to Prisma Health Midlands Foundation to fund research led by Prisma Health Children’s Hospital—Midlands and in partnership with USC School of Pharmacy. The announcement was made September 24 at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital.
Serve & Connect is scheduled to host a ribbon cutting ceremony for Greg’s Place, a new community center and the future headquarters of the organization, on Friday, October 3, at 9:30 a.m. The center is located off Decker Boulevard at 8131 Brookfield Rd and represents a major step forward in revitalization efforts for the surrounding community. “Greg’s Place is designed to increase access to local resources, create opportunities for neighbors to connect, and provide a safe space for youth,” said Kassy Alia Ray, PhD, CEO of Serve & Connect. “Our hope is that this space will contribute to the revitalization of Decker Boulevard, a place remembered by many as a hub for entertainment, family, and community life.”
