When most people think about bras, they think lingerie, but Rebecca Clay is a breast cancer survivor, and she has come up with a unique way to use bras that will help with cancer research.
Clay is currently residing in Greenville but she travels around the state to promote her “bra–cketbooks,” which are purses made from bras. Clay said the idea came to her after she was stricken with breast cancer in 2007. In her case, she had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. After that ordeal, she said she was committed to leading a normal life and doing all she could to support the cure for breast cancer.
“I began to design pocketbooks from my own bras as a lark after a glass or two of chardonnay,” she chuckled. “But every time I took one out, everyone would want to know where I got it, and they just got rave reviews. So then I thought, why not do it for real and use the profits to find the cure?”
Starting as a cottage industry in her basement, she ordered a few bras and went to work. All the bra–cketbooks are made in South Carolina, and Clay embellishes them with designer trim she said brings on a “smart, savvy appearance.”
“They aren’t just elegant; they are conversation pieces,” Clay said.
A bra–cketbook autographed by actress Eva Longoria was auctioned off September 23 at the S.C. Ovarian Cancer Foundation’s Handbags for Hope. It sold for $700.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, so Clay is teaming up with Tina Johnson, owner of Over the Top, a distinctive boutique in Ridgeway. Johnson said her store caters to the “woman with impeccable taste” and true “fashionistas.”
“The things we sell are unique, and they say the woman wearing our hats, wraps, or jewelry is a definite individualist,” Johnson said. “That’s why I’m so thrilled that Rebecca will be there this Saturday with her bra–cketbooks. Not only are we selling something that’s one of a kind, but we are helping promote the cure for this terrible disease.”
Clay will be at Over the Top on October 9 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. She will autograph the inside of the bra–cketbooks, and proceeds will go to the Bra–cketbook Foundation to fight breast cancer.
