Biscuit House owner Gene Sansbury plans to retire when his lease runs out as he is part of the State Farmers Market property that has been sold to USC. Sansbury has been on Bluff Road since the 1970s. Through the years, Sansbury and the Biscuit House have raised more than $30,000 for the Red Cross, a combination of community donations and matching gifts. Additionally, the Biscuit House drives have brought in nearly 2,600 units of blood. Sansbury has been selling yellow tie–dyed T–shirts that have brought in more than $5,500 for the American Red Cross of Central South Carolina.
Sansbury helped with another project March 23. The senior class at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School sponsored a Last Call – Make a Difference for the Rural Mission at the Biscuit House from 7:30–10:30 am. The class, along with teachers and parents, will travel to John’s Island to assist in the improvement of the living conditions of some of the poorer residents of the S.C. Sea Islands May 21–May 25. Heathwood students have been going as part of their community service projects for the past 22 years. This year, the class of 2010 needed to raise at least $5,100 to purchase needed materials. T–shirts were sold by the class before the event and worn to the Biscuit House. Donations were collected at the Biscuit House, and Sansbury donated half of his sales from everyone who told him they were from Heathwood. Sansbury wrote a check for $1,500 for the mission. Also, $185 was was raisedin donations. Anyone who would like to donate, please call Joy Bruner at 231- 7787.
