South Carolina artist Steven Whetstone visited the eighth grade honors art class at Fulmer Middle School April 30. He presented his artwork and discussed with the art students how his education from Lexington District Two, the S.C. Governors School for the Arts, and his degree in art studio from the University of South Carolina helped prepare him for his career choice as a professional artist.

Also, while he was a student at USC, Steven played baseball for the Gamecocks, and then he played professional baseball for the Chicago White Sox after earning his art degree. In addition to his career presentation, Steven demonstrated gesture drawing and some various watercolor techniques to the students.

Whetstone’s work can be viewed at www.stevenwhetstone.com, Havens Art Gallery, and The Verve on Gervais Street in Columbia and in art galleries in Beaufort, S.C.

Fulmer Middle School honors art teacher, Melanie Ward, was Steven’s art teacher when he was a student at Saluda River Elementary.
