Three run second and sixth innings were more than enough for the Andrew Jackson Volunteers in Game 1 of the 2A baseball championship series as they defeated the Gray Collegiate War Eagles 8-4 Saturday, May 21.
Andrew Jackson got the offense going in the bottom of the first. Bryce Helms, Ashton Phillips, and Skyler Hegler all drew walks to load the bases with one out. Kyle Percival reached on an error scoring Helms and giving the Volunteers a 1-0 lead.
Andrew Jackson added to its lead in the second beginning with Brady Williams and Banks Helms drawing one-out walks. Bryce Helms reached on an error to load the bases with two outs. A double by Phillips cleared the bases and increased the Volunteers’ lead to 4-0.
Gray responded in the top of the third beginning with a one-out single by Savion Smith. Gavin Creede followed with a triple scoring Smith and shrinking the deficit to 4-1. Creede later scored on an error to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Volunteers got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-2 when Phillips singled scoring Landon Peavy.
The War Eagles responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. A single by Stukes scored Smith and trimmed the deficit to 5-3. Pinch runner Triston Hamilton later scored to make the score 5-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bryce Helms hit a one-out double, eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Skyler Hegler blasted a two-run home run to set the final score.
