The students, faculty and staff, and alumni of AC Moore Elementary School have 75 years worth of celebrating to do. On Friday, March 10, AC Moore will host alumni events to mark the school’s 75th anniversary.
The school currently has around 350 students and has turned out a number of outstanding alumni over the years. Some of those alumni include City Council Member Kit Smith; SC Supreme Court Justice Jean Toal; Nobel Prize winner, Kary Mullis; former Mayor of Columbia, Kirkman Finlay; and Finlay’s sister, the owner of Finleaf Gallery, Peg Finlay Averyt.
AC Moore is also hosting its first annual benefit auction at Seawell’s Restaurant on March 10 from 7–10 pm following a reception from 6–7 pm to coincide with the 75th anniversary. The auction is being held to support The Ed Foundation.
AC Moore Principal Quantina Haggwood said, “The Ed Foundation’s purpose is to support capital gains and staff. It helps schools like AC Moore that are smaller neighborhood schools and don’t have as much money as the larger schools. The organization raises money to close that gap.”
The school is collecting acquisitions for the auction. A few of the donations are knitting, Spanish, and piano lessons from a few of the teachers. Other donations include original artwork by AC Moore alumnus, David Yaghjian, and bikes from Outspokin’ Bicycles.
On the day of the auction, alumni will be able to enjoy an open house from 10 am–noon, which includes tours of the school given by members of the student council. Also the school’s little bobcat singers will perform the school’s song.
“The song is great because it begins with AC Moore we love you, which every alumni remembers,” said Alumni Chair and AC Moore parent, Susie Dibble.
AC Moore Elementary School has a strong focus on the arts and literacy. Librarian Sara Eadie started “The Hagrid Book Club” which includes four fifth grade boys. Every Tuesday they each get 30 minutes to read a book to Hagrid, Eadie’s chocolate lab. Not only has the program improved their reading level, but also Hagrid has taught them compassion for others.
AC Moore is a diverse school and celebrates that fact. In one of the school’s scrapbooks from 1949, teacher Agnes McDuffie said, “AC Moore’s goal is to teach kids to live peacefully with one another.”
