The A.C. Flora class of 1965 held its 55th+2 reunion April 22-23. Due to COVID, the 55th was postponed in 2020, but the class decided it did not want to wait three years to gather again. The 22-member reunion committee was chaired by Bobby Foster. Approximately 160 alumni and spouses gathered Friday night at Rockbridge for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and again Saturday night at Forest Lake Club for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dancing with music provided by Heart ’n Soul, some of whom attended Flora with the class. On Saturday evening, nearly 100 deceased classmates were remembered in a photo display in the Memorial Room. When the class of 1965 graduated, the headline in the student newspaper, The Winged Press, Senior Edition ( June 2, 1965), proclaimed “Class of 1965 Boasts Largest in State’s History,” and the lead paragraph read, “Evidence of the postwar ‘baby boom’ will be exemplified tonight as approximately 450 A.C. Flora seniors receive their high school diplomas. The exercises are scheduled to begin at Township Auditorium at 8:30 p.m., and the processional will be led by Senior Class President Dave Merry and Vice-President Pope Lawson, followed by Pat McLaughlin, secretary; Dickie Sturkie, treasurer; Steve Savitz, commencement speaker; and Doug King, graduation chairman.” Flora opened in the early ’60s with the 10th and 11th grades. The ninth and 12th grades were added at the beginning of this class’s freshman year, so the class of 1965 was the first class to matriculate through Flora for all four years of high school.
