Flora Lady Falcons and Dreher Lady Blue Devils should have been decided a lot sooner than it was, but the Region 4-4A rivals went through regulation and overtime tied at 0-0 before A.C. Flora got four penalty kicks to Dreher’s three to win it and win the region.Photo by Perry McLeod.

Despite only taking three shots and playing much of the first half in their own end of the field, the Lady Blue Devils could have had easily had a 1-0 lead or better, but Falcon keeper Amelia Hanshaw had something to say about that.

The junior made a point-blank sliding save in the 15th minute when Dallas Bass got loose down the right sideline and crossed a ball to Ansley Charlton streaking down the center of the box for a shot. Three minutes later Dreher’s Regan Dennis took a free kick from 35 yards out that sailed over the A.C. Flora wall and was headed under the cross bar, but Hanshaw made a leaping save to punch it over. Finally, in the 36th minute, Dreher’s Sophie Burkett got off a blast, but Hanshaw dove to keep the match scoreless.

On the other hand, the Lady Falcons dominated possession for the most part and could have led in the first half as well, but they did not get a shot off until the 27th minute when Grace Vipperman’s attempt sailed wide. That was quickly followed by shots from Shelby Jacobs, Copeland Reynolds, and Page Jenkins that all missed the mark leaving the score at 0-0 at halftime.

The Falcons ripped off the first five shots of the second half and almost got one when Jenkins’s long right footer bounced off the crossbar in the 52nd minute. The backline of Sawyer Brown, Emma Britt, Elizabeth Thomas, and Reynolds kept Dreher without an attempt until Dennis took a free kick in the 61st minute that sailed wide. The only other Blue Devil shot was another free kick from Dennis in the 73rd minute, which Hanshaw collected without much fanfare.Photo by Perry McLeod.

After those five shots in the first 18 minutes of the second half, Dreher’s backline of Grayson Moss, Dennis, Abigail Lacy, and Amanda Collins settled in and held Flora to two more shots that came from Jordan Roberts in the 58th minute and stoppage time. Dreher keeper Reisey Dillard collected one, and the other sailed harmlessly over the goal.

The match stood scoreless at the end of regulation sending it to two five-minute overtime periods. Dillard collected a 40-yard free kick for Dreher from Jenkins in the first five minutes, and then Jenkins bounced a long ball off the right post in the final minute for A.C. Flora, but the match remained scoreless and went to penalty kicks.

The Falcons missed their first attempt in the penalty kick phase, and Dennis promptly put Dreher up 1-0 with a blast to the right post. Vipperman evened it up with a shot to the right post, but Bass went left to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 advantage. Jenkins went left for A.C. Flora to tie it at 2-2, and then Dillard stepped out of goal to put Dreher up 3-2. Hanshaw returned the favor with one in the left corner for the Falcons. The Blue Devils missed their next attempt, and then Reynolds bounced one off the right post and in to put A.C. Flora back on top at 4-3. Dreher’s next attempt bounced off the post and out. The Falcons then rushed Hanshaw and celebrated the hard-fought victory and Region 4-4A title.
