Midlands Arts Conservatory charter school seeks new head of school for upcoming school year

Midlands Arts Conservatory in downtown Columbia will seek a new head of school for the upcoming school year as the no-tuition state charter school continues to expand its arts and academics curriculum.

Shannon Hickey, who opened the school in August, will leave MAC June 30 to begin work as Dean of Academics at Northside Christian Academy in Lexington.

A recruitment and search for a new head of school for Midlands begins immediately, Board Chair Rosie Craig said.

“We are so appreciative to Shannon for her leadership and dedication to Midlands Arts Conservatory. She accomplished the daunting task of opening a new school,” said Rosie Craig, chair of the Midlands Arts Conservatory board of directors. “We wish her great success in her new venture.”

Midlands Arts Conservatory is a state charter school, approved by the S.C. Public Charter School District Board in 2016. The school opened last August and quickly is building buzz in the arts community.

The school was approved to serve students in middle and high school, and plans are to add one additional grade level each year—or 2019- 20 the school will offer grades six through eight.

Student applications still are being accepted and enrollment details are online at www.midlandsartsconservatory.org.

The MAC board of directors is finalizing information to post the Head of School position and the process, to be led by a transition team of school staff and board of directors members. The goal is to have the new leader to in place by July 1.

“The ideal candidate will have successful experience as a principal or Head of School, preferably with middle school experience in an urban setting, and also have worked in an arts-infused or otherwise arts-focused school,” Craig said.

The MAC transition team includes Rosie Craig, Catherine Aitken, Jennifer Morrison, Kathleen Warthen, Jasmine Woodson, and David Turner from the board of directors; Marsha Merry, director of operations for the school; and John Williams, a K-12 public relations consultant with extensive experience in charter school communications and executive searches.
