Homeowners opposing rezoning

Blythewood homeowners are appealing to Richland County to halt plans by a Texas group called ECapital, the new owner of the Golf Course of South Carolina at Crickentree, to rezone the links to permit the construction of hundreds of residential single-family medium-density homes.

Food Lion remodeling stores

Twenty-two Midlands Food Lions are part of a $158 million plan to remodel 92 stores in the greater Myrtle Beach, Florence, Columbia, and Charleston markets in 2019. The company also expects to hire nearly 2,000 new employees at these stores.

Church opening space to public

Downtown Church, the Presbyterian church that meets at the Central Energy building at BullStreet, is opening 8,000 square feet of space in the facility as a wedding and entertainment venue.

Columbia’s St. Pat’s celebration ranked

Columbia is ranked No. 25 on WalletHub’s list of the 200 Best Cities for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations. Taking the top spot was Chicago, followed by Philadelphia, Madison, Wisc., Boston, and Tampa, Fla. Columbia ranked two spots ahead of Savannah, Ga., whose St. Pat’s festival draws hundreds of thousands each year.

Hospital tightening security

Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands is introducing a new security badging system for guests to its inpatient floors. All guests now must show photo identification and get a color-coded badge to visit patients on the third, fourth, fifth, or sixth floors.

Health worker school established

The USC Arnold School of Public Health has established the Community Health Worker Institute with funding from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation to offer entry-level training and field placement to community health workers and training to community health worker supervisors.

Mozingo opening PR firm

Public relations veteran Padgett S. Mozingo is opening Padgett Communications, a consulting firm specializing in communications strategy, public relations, event planning, and social media for nonprofits, small businesses, and professional services.

Dubose Fitness opening

DuBose Fitness is now open at 6169 St. Andrews Road beside Zorba’s Restaurant in the Seven Oaks Shopping Center. The gym offers individualized instruction from certified personal trainers for adults and teenagers.

USC dancers raise over $1 million

The 21st annual USC Dance Marathon raised a record $1,038,156 for the kids at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Columbia. The proceeds support the hospital’s Child Life program, designed to make hospital stays and treatments as comfortable as possible.

State again sets export record

For the ninth consecutive year, the state of South Carolina set a record for total export sales in 2018. Gov. Henry McMaster, the S.C. Department of Commerce, and the S. C. Ports Authority announced the state’s 2018 export sales totaled $34.6 billion.

U-Haul Company of South Carolina, Inc. has announced that J Wheels Auto Sales 2 has signed on as a U-Haul® neighborhood dealer to serve the West Columbia community. J Wheels Auto Sales at 3805 Augusta Road will offer U-Haul trucks, truck sales, trailers, towing equipment, and moving supplies.
