Skyhawks battle back to beat Heathwood Hall

Hammond 170 Drew Turner tries to throw Heathwood Hall's Henry Kimbrough.The Heathwood Hall Highlanders built a 24-0 lead against the visiting Hammond Skyhawks in a SCISA Region II-3A wrestling match Wednesday, January 9, but the Skyhawks roared back to win 48-30.

Mac Merritt got the Highlanders on the board first with a hard-fought 10-9 decision over Hammond 132 Harper Meacham. Heathwood 138 AJ Kuse then got a first period pin, and Reagan Olsen followed with six more points on a Hammond forfeit at 145.

Heathwood 152 Darius Bates earned a 9-5 decision over Hammond’s Ryan Kane next, and then Minh Dang got a second period pin at 160 to put the Highlanders up 24-0.

Hammond 170 Drew Turner got the Skyhawks on the board with a first per

iod pin. That was followed by Heathwood forfeits at 182, 195, 220, and 285, and a first period pin by Hammond 106 Luke Martin to earn the Skyhawks a 36-24 advantage. Sam DuBose then got a third period pin at 113 for Hammond to push the lead to 42-24.

 In the 120 match, Hammond’s Leo Addeo was leading 3-1 in the second period when he was slammed to the mat by Heathwood Hall’s Jake Clarkson. The slam was ruled illegal, and Addeo was awarded the victory by injury default.

Hammond forfeited the 126 match to give the final count.
