Local aviator celebrates anniversary of Wright Brothers first flight

Jim Hamilton wore the pictured flight jacket and Wright Brothers tie for the 115th Anniversary of the Wright Brothers First Flight while attending the December 17 Rotary Club meeting. The speaker was Robert L. Sumwalt, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a Columbia, S.C. native, and the first South Carolinian to ever serve on the five member NTSB. The custom made flight jacket was given to Hamilton in 1996 in celebration of the 40th year since his first solo flight. The aircraft used was an Army L-19 Birddog embroidered on the back with his birth year as the registration number.
