Launched in 1998 by Heathwood faculty member Stan Wood, who still serves as its director, PEAK took advantage of Heathwood’s 122- acre campus to create hands-on opportunities for students to challenge themselves, gain confidence and leadership skills, and learn how to work effectively in teams.

PEAK facilities, including an alpine tower, ropes course, giant swing, climbing wall, archery range, trails, and a boathouse on the Heathwood pond, are used by Heathwood students and community groups for team building and leadership development. Students also use the facilities in P. E. classes and afterschool programs.

Guests at the anniversary party were able to explore all of these facilities, assisted by PEAK student leaders, a group of 35 upper school students who have undergone extensive training and commit to volunteering at least 20 hours a year with the PEAK program.

PEAK’s first 20 years have been exciting, said Wood. “Our facilities have grown and blossomed, and we’ve taken increasing advantage of resources like our pond, trails, and forested areas, and used them in great ways. What has not changed in the time I’ve been here is Heathwood’s commitment to learning beyond the classroom. That’s what makes this school unique.”
