Palmetto Brass joins Palmetto Mastersingers for holiday concerts

Mellow horns and pulsing drums team up with the Palmetto Mastersingers for their holiday program, “Brothers, Sing On.” The concert will be presented twice—Friday, November 16, at Union United Methodist Church in Irmo, and Saturday, November 17, at Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow Street, corner of Devine. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and are available via www.palmettomastersingers.org, from any Mastersinger, or at the venue on the night of the program.

The Palmetto Brass quintet accompanies the singers in Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata,” and also presents an arrangement of carols for brass, “Christmas Crackers.” Popular percussionist Matthew Jones lends his unique talents to the frenzied “The Sleigh” and to the Nigerian Christmas song, “Betelehemu.”

Last season, the Mastersingers inaugurated the concept of a concert bridging the seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas, and popular response merits a repeat. The program begins with Grieg’s “Brothers, Sing On,” a staple of male choral ensembles. Songs of courage and faith include musical settings of two timeless poems, Henley’s “Invictus” and Donne’s “A Hymn to God the Father.”

No Mastersingers concert is complete without a spiritual. This one features rising star tenor, Johnnie Felder as soloist on De Mornin’ Come.

Artistic director Lillian Quackenbush, now in her third season leading the Mastersingers, said, “Holidays seem to awaken our senses, as familiar sights, smells, and sounds bring memories of scenes, tastes and songs that warm our hearts.”

Allison Hilbish is the Mastersingers’ accompanist and assistant director Frank Brown will conduct two pieces.
