In three consecutive plays, Lower Richland’s Jamal Henderson hauled in a 26-yard touchdown pass, grabbed an interception on defense, and then scored on a 67-yard reception to help the Diamond Hornets defeat the Dreher Blue Devils 28-14 on the refurbished Memorial Stadium’s debut for varsity football Friday, September 28.

Henderson finished with four receptions for 153 yards and two touchdowns and was a force on defense with the interception and multiple pass break ups and tackles.

Quarterback Jamison Ganzy accounted for 22 of Lower Richland’s 28 points. He completed 8- of-15 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He ran 11 times for 59 yards and a touchdown. He also completed two successful 2-point conversions with his arm and legs.

The Blue Devils got on the board first with a 46-yard drive that started late in the first quarter and ended early in the second. Facing a fourth-and-eight from the Lower Richland 44-yard line, quarterback Ryan Campbell—who also handles punting duties for Dreher—lined up in punt formation but tossed a 20- yard pass to Louis Parr for the first down and more. Campbell completed 18- of-31 passes for 206 yards and two interceptions on the night.

A flip pass to Jamal Anderson then got the Blue Devils to the Diamond Hornet 1-yard line. Two plays later, Day Day Washington fumbled heading into the goal line from three yards out, but David Shealy recovered it in the end zone for the touchdown. Blake Craig’s extra point made it a 7-0 game with 11:05 left in the first half.

Lower Richland then rattled off 20 unanswered points, the first of which came on the ensuing drive which covered 70 yards in seven plays. About 49 of those yards came on a Ganzy bomb to Henderson that set the Diamond Hornets up at the Dreher 6-yard line. Ganzy then scored on the second of two runs, and hit Quanta Jackson for the 2-point conversion to give Lower Richland an 8-7 lead with 7:46 left in the second quarter.

A couple possessions later, Dreher’s Kyrell Michael picked off Ganzy on a deflected pass but offsetting penalties made the teams replay the down. A few plays later, Ganzy found Henderson for a 26-yard touchdown and a 14-7 Diamond Hornet lead with less than a minute left in the second quarter.

Henderson grabbed an interception on the Blue Devils’ very next offensive play, and then caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from Ganzy to give Lower Richland a 20-7 advantage at the break.

Both teams went up and down the field in the third quarter but could not find the end zone.

The Diamond Hornets appeared to break the scoring drought when Antonio Myers grabbed an apparent interception and raced 66 yards to the end zone, but the play was called back due to defensive holding. Dreher took advantage five plays later when Washington raced in from five yards out for the touchdown. Washington finished with 121 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. He also had two receptions for 40 yards. Craig added the extra point, and the Blue Devils trailed 20-14 with 5:33 to play.

Five plays into a drive that started at the Diamond Hornets’ own 28-yard line, Keyshawn Capers took a seemingly harmless hand-off, got lost in the scrum at midfield, and then emerged from the pile and raced 50 yards to the end zone. Capers finished with 107 yards and the touchdown on eight carries. Ganzy then ran in the 2-point conversion, and Lower Richland led 28-14 with 3:03 left in the game.

The Blue Devils then drove 27 yards to the Diamond Hornets’ 35-yard line. Tre’von Dreher raced 25 yards to the Lower Richland 2-yard line on a reverse, but a block in the back brought the ball back to the Dreher 49-yard line. Corey Webber then grabbed an interception with 42.5 seconds to play to seal the win for the Diamond Hornets.

Lower Richland improves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Region 4-4A and hosts Crestwood next. The Blue Devils fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the region. They play at Orangeburg- Wilkinson next.
