Richland Northeast’s Erin Gainey had five aces, three kills, and two blocks, and Emi Crout added six kills and two aces to lead the homestanding Cavaliers to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-15) win over the Lower Richland Diamond Hornets Tuesday, September 4.

RNE also got help from libero Amiri Mason who finished with six aces and multiple digs. Hanna Montgomery had a kill and three aces, and Liberty Moyd got three kills.

LaNiya Smith led Lower Richland with six kills. Ireona Brooks added three, and Morgan Jackson finished with two.

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set behind the serving of Gainey, but the Diamond Hornets fought back to grab a 5-4 edge with a winner and a kill from Smith. Richland Northeast then rattled off 10 straight points with three aces from Mason and Crout’s touch shot winner, baseline backwards shot winner, and kill.

The Cavaliers took control early in the second set building a 10-2 lead with three aces from Mason. The Diamond Hornets got to within 13-9, mostly with help from RNE miscues, but that was as close as they would get as a kill from Gainey closed out the set.

Lower Richland took the first point of the third set, but the Cavaliers responded with a kill and an ace from Gainey and never trailed again.

The RNE lead grew to 19-10 before a kill from Brooks and a couple of Cavalier mistakes closed the gap to 21-15, but a kill from Crout and an ace from Heiress Hodges to go with two LR miscues gave the Cavs the match.
