Cardinals win home opener over Highlanders

Shanye Monsanto ran for 111 yards and a touchdown, and Chase Robinson and AJ DePalma also found the end zone as the Cardinal Newman Cardinals defeated the visiting Heathwood Hall Highlanders 20-8 Friday, August 31 at St. Sebastian Stadium in Columbia.

Cardinal Newman (2-1, 1-1 SCISA AAA) received the opening kickoff, and Robinson ran it back 35 yards to set the Cardinals up at their own 44. Five plays later, DePalma weaved his way through the Highlander defense for a 12-yard score. Heathwood Hall blocked the kick, however, leaving the Cardinals up only 6-0.

Later in the quarter, Heathwood Hall took over at the Cardinal Newman 8-yard line after a special team‘s miscue. Two plays later, Alex Lewis called his own number and scored from seven yards out to tie the game. On the extra point, Davis Buchanan picked up an errant snap and ran in for two, giving the Highlanders an 8-6 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter.

Photo by Mike Maddock In the second quarter, the Cardinals got the ball back at their 46. Robinson quickly sprinted 21 yards down the sidelines to give CN a firstand goal at the Highlander 8. Three plays later, Robinson punched it in from the three for the touchdown. The conversion try was no good, and the Cardinals led 12-8.

The score remained this way until the fourth quarter. Heathwood was forced to punt and Deon- Tay Smith returned it to the Highlander 33. Two plays later, Monsanto scored from five yards out, and with DePalma’s two-point pass to Jake Rehling, gave the Cardinals a 20-8 lead.

DePalma completed 9-of-18 passes for 207 yards for Cardinal Newman . He also ran seven times for 23 yards and one touchdown. Monsanto rushed 19 times for 111 yards and one touchdown. DeonTay Smith caught five passes for 126 yards.

Lewis completed 9- of-13 passes for 72 yards for Heathwood Hall. He also rushed 17 times for 53 yards and one score. Reagan Olsen caught six passes for 55 yards.

With the win, Cardinal Newman improves to 2-1 and travels to Augusta Christian Friday, September 7.

Heathwood Hall falls to 1-2 and hosts Laurence Manning next.
