Palmetto Health and Richland Library to supply babies with books

Contributed by Palmetto Health

Thanks to funding from Palmetto Health, during the month of September, Richland Library is expecting to welcome hundreds of its newest and youngest readers into the world. The library will be supplying every baby born in Richland County with a library card and a book as part of the Growing Readers initiative.

The initiative, which also celebrates National Library Card Sign- Up Month, stresses the first five years of life are critical to a child’s vocabulary and literacy development. Attached to the library card, parents can find early literacy tips.

Palmetto Health is excited to be involved with focusing on the importance of early literacy and reading to children. Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital is a sponsor of the Reach Out and Read Program that gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital also is the presenting sponsor for the Fireflies Reading Program, which incentivizes children for reading.
