Bearcats knock off Eagles

Photo by Jim Marczesky In a game featuring seven combined turnovers, the Brookland- Cayce Bearcats downed the homestanding Airport Eagles 32-14 Friday, August 24.

While the Eagles had five of those turnovers, they did convert Brookland Cayce’s two into more points (7 to 6) However, the Bearcat defense came up with turnovers at opportune times.

After an uneventful first quarter, despite each team trading turnovers, Airport ended an 11-play, 88-yard drive when Brandon Caughman found Izaiah Walker-Warren for a 25- yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 Eagles’ lead with 11:26 left to go in the second quarter.

Brookland- Cayce responded on its next drive when Jo Pradubsri took a handoff eight yards for a score. The extra point was missed and the Bearcats trailed 7-6.

Later in the quarter, Paul Edwards came up with an interception and took the ball to the Airport 24 yard line. From there, Reed Charpia found Will Way for a 19-yard pass to get the Bearcats to the Eagles’ 5-yard line. Two players later, Charpia carried the ball in from a yard out. The two-point conversion failed, and Brookland- Cayce led 12-7.

Charpia found success through the air with 10- and 11-yard passes to Latrell Jamison and a 14- yard pass to Will Way. The 7-play, 65-yard drive ended with an 11-yard scamper from Way. Caleb Hunnicutt converted the extra point, and Brookland-Cayce led 19-7.

Later in the quarter, Airport recovered a fumble and took over at the Brookland Cayce 47. Nanders Lawrence immediately struck with a 31-yard run. Then Josh Goodman chewed up nine more yards to get the ball inside the Bearcats’ 10-yard line. Lawrence scored four players later from a yard out to chip into the deficit 18-14.

Brookland- Cayce took control from there, scoring 14 points in the final quarter. Beginning with a 13-play, 65-yard drive that concluded with a 5-yard run by Pradubsri, giving the Bearcats a 25-14 lead.

With under two minutes left, Charpia provided the final points with a 15- yard run. Hunnicutt converted a long extra point, and Brookland-Cayce led 32-14.

Charpia completed 20-of-24 passes for 227 yards. He ran 10 times for 20 yards and two touchdowns. Way rushed the ball 13 times for 72 yards and one score. Pradubsri had nine catches for 109 yards.

Caughman completed 13-of-15 passes for 92 yards and one touchdown. Lawrence rushed 13 times for 84 yards and a touchdown. He also had one catch for four yards.

With the win, the Bearcats move to 2-0 and will travel to Spring Valley Friday, August 31.

Airport falls to 1-1 and travels to Swansea.
