Barbara and John Wrisley Barbara and John Wrisley “And they said it wouldn’t last,” remarks Barbara Wrisley.

She was recalling her marriage to her husband, John, on August 28, 1948. A record- breaking heat wave gripped Central New England at the time, but they kept their cool and drove to the Maine shore for a two week honeymoon following their vows. They had graduated high school only the year before and a few skeptics doubted the union could last very long.

“ When we reached our Golden Anniversary 20 years ago we felt quite smug,” said John. “They told us only seven percent of marriages endure 50 years. Now we learn that only 0.01 percent of marriages last 70 years. So, we count our blessings and hope to make it to 75. We are still the best of friends and enormously thankful for a large, supportive family.”

The Wrisleys are proud parents of five, grandparents of 11, and great- grandparents of eight. They try to maintain their mental agility by reciting the names of the entire family and singing some of the hit songs of their youth.
