Diamond Hornets clip Falcons

Photo by Perry McLeod The Lower Richland Diamond Hornets opened up a 9-0 first quarter lead and ended the game on a 15- 7 run to come away with a 46-44 win over the A.C. Flora Falcons Friday, February 2.

Christian Brown, who had a game-high 20 points, started the contest with a 3- pointer and a layup to give Lower Richland a 5-0 lead. The Diamond Hornets also got scoring from Kelvin Hughes and Karl Scott. A series of missed shots and miscues on offense kept A.C. Flora off the scoreboard during the first quarter, as Lower Richland led 9-0.

A pair of free throws by Derrick Sinkler got the Falcons on the board early in the second quarter. A jumper by Diamante Brown and 3- pointers from Quincy Riley and Zack Foulks trimmed the deficit to 12-10 with 3:49 left in the second quarter.

The Diamond Hornets responded with buckets from Scott and Hughes, along with a 3-pointer from Brown to go up 19-11. The two teams traded points over the next two minutes when Matt Jamison drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer closing the Falcons’ deficit to 23-18 at halftime.

Photo by Perry McLeod In the third quarter, 3-pointers from Sinkler and Foulks gave A.C. Flora a 24- 23 advantage, but Scott hit a shot on the ensuing possession to put Lower Richland back in front at 25-24. Sinkler then gave the lead back to the Falcons with a layup and a bucket, and with some help from Foulks, they led the Diamond Hornets 34-29 going into the fourth quarter.

Free throws from Sinkler and Robert McCray extended the Falcons’ lead to 37-31. Lower Richland answered with free throws from Brown, Korey Richardson, and Amon Rice and buckets from Brown and Richardson to go up 41-39. Two free throws from Sinkler tied the game before a free throw from Brown gave Lower Richland the lead at 42-41.

Brown then converted a close range shot and got help from TeVaughn Higgins to give the Diamond Hornets a 46-41 advantage. A.C. Flora closed out the game with three points from Diamante Brown but fell short when the final buzzer sounded.
