The Dreher Lady Blue Devils cut a 19-point deficit to two points with a minute to play against the visiting A. C. Flora Lady Falcons, but the Falcons were able to hold on winning 52-47 in a Region V-4A girls’ basketball battle January 19.

The game could not have started worse for the Blue Devils as they committed seven turnovers before Haliyah Sumter got their first points with a couple of free throws at the 3:33 mark of the first period.

The Falcons took advantage building an 11- 4 lead to start the second. Debrielle Williams led A.C. Flora with four free throws, and McKinley Brooks-Sumpter got three points. Sumter added a layup for Dreher.

The Falcons built a 20-4 advantage with 2:30 left before halftime with just one field goal, a fastbreak bucket from Jordan Strange. The other points came from free throws. Strange, Williams, and Brooks- Sumpter combined to go 7-of-10 from the line. The Blue Devils did not score a point until Regan Foulks hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1: 41 remaining.

Flora closed the first half with two jumpers from Brooks-Sumpter. Dreher responded with four free throws from Sumter to trail 24-9 at the break.

Williams hit a free throw, and then she and Strange got fast break layups to push the Falcons’ advantage to 29-9 at the 6:47 mark of the third.

TT Jones then came to life for the Blue Devils with seven straight points, but A.C. Flora countered with two rebounds and stick-back baskets from Chasity Sessions and a drive from Strange to lead 35-16 midway through the third.

Then Sumter and Jones started the Dreher comeback single-handedly outscoring the Falcons 13-5 to close the third and cut the deficit to 40-29. Jones had 11 points in the period, and Sumter had nine.

The Blue Devils went on a 7-1 run to start the fourth. Jones had three to go with two each from Carla Brown and Sumter. A.C. Flora responded with four straight from Brooks- Sumpter to lead 45-36 with 4:06 to play.

Dreher then got a layup from Jamya Scott and free throw Eboni Jones, but Brooks- Sumpter got a lay-in to put the Falcons up 47-39 with a little over three minutes to play.

Sumter hit four straight free throws for Dreher before Strange hit a couple for A. C. Flora with 2:02 to play. Dreher’s Kourtney English was then fouled as she made a basket in the post. She missed the ensuing free throw, but Sumter was there to stick the rebound back in and cut the Falcons’ lead to two with 1:23 to play.

However, that was as close as the Blue Devils would get as Williams would sink two free throws, and Kailyn Glover would add another to give A.C. Flora the 52-47 victory.

Strange led the Falcons with 16 points. Brooks-Sumpter added 15, and Williams had 14. Sessions finished with six, and Glover had the free throw.

Sumter scored a game-high 25 for the Blue Devils. TT Jones added 14, all of which came in the second half. Brown, Scott, and English each had two points, and Foulks and Eboni Jones each had a free throw.
