Westwood rolls past Cavaliers

Photo by Perry McLeod Russell Jones Jr. scored a game- high 18 points to lead the visiting Westwood Redhawks to a 66- 44 victory over the Richland Northeast Cavaliers in a Region III- 4A clash Friday, January 5.

Kendall Wormack added 14 points for Westwood, and Zachary Dunlap had nine. Other scorers included Jalen Watson with eight, Sam Stroman with five, Bre’on Lewis with four, Ty Turner and Tyrrell Huff each had three, and Ahmon Green had two.

Daniel Montgomery and Joshua Boyd led the Cavaliers with eight points each. Donovan White, Dominic Vereen, and Norman Nowell chipped in six points each. Durand Brown and Tysean Osbey finished with five each, and Nathaniel Robinson had two.

The Redhawks jumped out to a 23-11 first period lead getting scoring from six different players with at least three points each. Dunlap led with six points, and Jones and Wormack each got four. Montgomery paced Richland Northeast with four.

Westwood slowed a bit in the second but still outscored the Cavaliers 14-8 to build a 37-19 halftime lead. Wormack got five points, and Jones added four. White, Vereen, Nowell, and Boyd all had two-pointers for Richland Northeast.

Jones and Wormack scored five each for Westwood in the third growing the lead to 55-31. Nowell had three for the Cavaliers.

Jones added five more for Westwood, and Boyd got six of his points for Richland Northeast in the fourth to close out the game.
