Quirky Crimes in the Capital City

Forest Acres

Forest Drive: Police are looking for three men who stole cartons of cigarettes from a drug store at 8 p.m. Saturday. Employees told the responding officers the trio came in and one asked the manager for a price check while the second suspect distracted the clerk on duty. At that point, the third person hopped over the counter, flipped open a black garbage bag he had apparently brought with him, and began tossing cartons of cigarettes into it. Once the two employees caught on this was a heist, the three thieves fled on foot out the two doors of the store to a waiting car in the parking lot. The entire incident was caught on surveillance tape and a copy had been given to police for identification of the suspects. The store manager said an inventory will have to be taken to determine the quantity and brands of stolen cigarettes.

Forest Drive: A group of teens are being sought by police after they had been spotted burglarizing cars near Richland Mall at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Three victims called police between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to report their cars had been pilfered and in one incident where two of the victims were in the same car, the thieves had stolen a bag of nickels worth approximately $5 but had also gotten one of the victims’ prescription drugs he had just refilled. Several narcotic prescriptions were stolen including oxycodone, Xanax, and Ambien. The incident, caught on surveillance tapes, shows two of the burglars rummaging through the cars and pocketing the money and pills while a third person acted as their lookout. In the second car, the victim said nothing seemed to be missing.
