David Wilson Thompson

Mr. David Wilson Thompson, a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away December 26, 2017. He was the son of the late Dr. Edgar Stinceon Thompson and Anna Schultz Thompson of Venice, Florida.

David was a graduate of Reynolds High School and The Citadel Class of 1948. He served in the United States Navy as an aviator and received 13 decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, while serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He was active in management in the trucking industry and later became a financial consultant. Upon retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively and resided in both Venice, Florida, and Columbia. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved all animals, especially his two Boston terrier dogs and foxes, which spurred his beloved family nickname of Grandfox. He was always active in the community, serving as a scout master and deacon in his church. David was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sara Hamrick Thompson; a daughter, Edith Black (Dan) of Columbia; a son, E. Earle Thompson ( Jean) of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren, four great-grandsons, and two Boston terriers.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. The family received friends in the church parlor following the service. The interment will be private. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, the Thompson Scholarship Fund at The Citadel, or Forest Lake Presbyterian Church.
