Jay Bender Jay Bender Jay Bender, a founding partner of Baker Ravenel & Bender, is receiving an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award from the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.

The Greater Columbia Restaurant Association has honored longtime hospitality industry leaders for their dedication to the industry and community at the annual Columbia Benefit Dinner, including Jim and Ethel Albergot ti of Chestnut Grill, Al Lof tis of Al’s Upstairs, and Keith Sikes of Wings & Ale. The Rudy Award, named after late Columbia restaurateur Rudy Fleischhacker, was presented to Commissioner Hugh Weathers of the SC Department of Agriculture.

Columbia College recently expanded their degree offerings, and a new Hospitality and Tourism Management concentration has been added to the Business program, in addition to several other concentrations. An Advisory Board has been selected and recently welcomed on campus for their first meeting. The Advisory Board members include Meredith G. Atkinson, Miriam Atria, Maria Chakides, Dr. Eleanor R. Glover Gladney, Cecil D. Hannibal, Kim Jamieson, Twila Jones, Jeff Hamman, Erin M. Mellen, Kristian Nieme, Douglas OFlaherty, Kathy Rabune, Neal Smoak, Mitch Uehling, Randy Waters, and Olivia Young.

The four chosen for November were Becky Bonavida, a Child Protective Services performance coach; Glenise Elmore, interim state human resources director; LaToya Roundtree, a SNAP and TANF program coordinator; and Todd Wilkins, a state information and systems business analyst.

Lynn Connelly Lynn Connelly Essex Homes has been named 2017 Corporate Member of the Year and C.R. Jackson, Inc. has been chosen as the 2017 Commercial Contractor of the Year by The Board of Directors of the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA).

U.S. Air Force Airman Bradon E. Bailey graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio- Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Bailey is the son of Leonard Bailey of Irmo and Cassandra Paulin of Columbia. He is a 2017 graduate of Westwood High School, Blythewood.

Keep the Midlands Beautiful hosted a Gala for a Greener Midlands December 1. During the evening festivities, the Midlands Green Awards were presented. The Midlands Green Award winners were nominated by citizens in the Midlands who believe the awardees work hard to live up to the mission of Keep the Midlands Beautiful and believe they should be awarded for their exceptional work in making the Midlands a cleaner, greener, more beautiful community.

The Green Large Business Award was given to Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

The Green Elected Official Award was given to Mayor Stephen Benjamin.

The Green Enforcement Officer of the Year was given to Senior Deputy Rudy Osteen.

Keep the Midland Beautiful Board of Directors recognized Keep the Midlands Beautiful Partner/ Volunteer of the Year Karen Swank Kustafik.

Lynn Connelly, RPh, owner of Medicine Mart Pharmacy in West Columbia, has been named the National Community Pharmacists Association 2017 Willard B. Simmons Independent Pharmacist of the Year.

Army Staff Sgt. Anthony L. Por ter has arrived for duty as a recruiter with Metro North Recruiting Company, Indianapolis Army Recruiting Battalion at Anderson Recruiting Center in Anderson, Indiana. Porter is a native of Columbia where he graduated from W. J. Keenan High School in 2005. He is married to the former Tiesha Glover, and they have a daughter.
