Diamond Hornets ground Falcons

Photo by Perry McLeod Tevaughn Higgins accounted for all six of Lower Richland’s touchdowns, four through the air and two on the ground, as the Diamond Hornets defeated the Darlington Falcons 38-6 in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

Lower Richland jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first half before Darlington found pay dirt and was never really threatened in the contest.

While the offense lit up the scoreboard, it was the defense that set the tone. On the Falcons’ first possession, Quantavius Byrd recovered a fumble for Lower Richland.

On the ensuing possession, Higgins found Xavier Hopkins for a 20- yard touchdown and a 6-0 Diamond Hornets’ lead.

Later in the quarter, Stanley Cheeseboro recovered the second Darlington fumble of the game. Higgins immediately turned it into points with a 30-yard run to the end zone giving Lower Richland a 12-0 lead.

On the next Lower Richland possession, Higgins found Karl Scott for a 59-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead to 24-0.

Darlington got on the board on its next possession. The Falcons had a 13-play, 57-yard drive which ended with a 1-yard plunge by Javorius Williams cutting the to deficit 24-6.

Lower Richland kept the momentum in the third quarter. After receiving the ball at midfield early in the quarter, it took the Diamond Hornets three plays to find the end zone. Higgins highlighted the drive with a 26-yard run and a 16-yard touchdown pass to Karl Scott, as Lower Richland held a 31- 6 lead.

Defensively, Lower Richland got two second half interceptions. For the game, the Diamond Hornets scored 19 points off four Darlington turnovers, while the Falcons failed to score off one Lower Richland turnover. Malich Jacobs finished with a team-high 15 tackles and three tackles for loss.

Offensively, Higgins finished with 377 total yards. Scott had four receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

This is the Diamond Hornets’ first playoff win since 1995.

Lower Richland (6-5) has its most wins since 1991 and will host the Myrtle Beach Seahawks Friday, November 10 in the second round.
