Eagles fly by Blue Devils

By Tim Gochnaur

The Chapin Eagles used a stifling defense and the spark provided by quarterback Rob Gordon on offense to earn a dominating 30-7 win over the Dreher Blue Devils in the Region V-4A opener for both teams Friday night, September 29 at Cecil Woolbright Field on the Chapin campus.

“Our guys rose to the occasion,” said Chapin head coach Justin Gentry. “We worked hard all week to prepare for a very good offense. We knew Jay Washington was going to come in here and pose a threat, and I think we kept him under control most of the night.”

Washington was a bright spot for the Devils. He blocked a Chapin punt on the Eagles’ first possession of the game that set the Devils up deep in Eagle territory. The opportunity fizzled on a high snap that lost 24 yards and eventually a turnover on downs. Dreher managed only 210 yards of total offense for the game.

Washington got Dreher’s only score of the night, a 68-yard touchdown gallop with 5:14 left in the game. Pierce Myrick adding the conversion kick.

“He is a special back on offense and playing a lot of defense for us,” Dreher head coach Treigh Sullivan. “I am glad we got him. He is a good player and a lot of fun to watch.”

The Eagles’ Case Barber punched in from a yard out, and Sailor Chason added the kick for Chapin’s first score as time ran out in the opening stanza. That completed a nine-play, 79-yard drive taking the final 2:57 of the quarter.

Gordon came in late in the first quarter to run the Eagles’ attack before giving the reins back to Roger Pedroni late in the game. Gordon provided just what the head coach ordered.

“He just provided a little spark,” Gentry said of the junior signal caller. “His legs kept some plays alive for us. He got some first downs for us where we had struggled on the first three series. He throws the deep ball real well, and we knew it would loosen up a little bit when he came in.”

Gordon directed a 13-play, 83-yard drive late in the second quarter, passing 11 yards to Kareem Bowers for a score with 45 seconds before halftime. Chason added the PAT.

Chapin’s first drive of the third quarter commenced after a Dreher punt and ended with a 24- yard field goal from Chason for a 17-0 lead.

Chapin’s first possession of the fourth quarter ended with a punt the Devils fumbled, and the Eagles recovered at the Devils’ 6-yard line. Bowers punched in from four yards out, and Chason added the conversion kick.

Dreher could not move on its next possession, and the Eagles answered with a 9-yard scoring run from Taison Thomas. Dreher’s Sterling Harris broke through the line to block the conversion kick.

Washington’s touchdown gallop on Dreher’s ensuing drive wrapped up the scoring.

The win moves Chapin to 4-2 overall, 1-0 in Region 5-4A, while Dreher falls to 3-3 and 0-1. The Eagles will host A.C. Flora Friday, October 6, and the Blue Devils will host Lower Richland.
