Greenville resident praises Columbia

The City of Columbia is a wonderful metropolitan area and sure serves as a jewel in the center of the state. Columbia has served as the state capital of South Carolina since the year 1786, when the South Carolina Assembly moved the state capital from Charleston to the Midlands.

The city is home to the University of South Carolina, which is the flagship university of the state. USC is situated in the downtown area of Columbia. The university has turned out a few famous alumni from their ranks who went on to have remarkable careers in business, government, and Hollywood: TV star Leeza Gibbons; George W. Bush Administration notable Andrew Card; Fox and Friends television personality Ainsley Earhardt; and the lead singer from the rock band Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius Rucker.

Downtown Columbia has beautiful buildings and architecture that I have always been in awe of, such as the South Carolina State House, Columbia Main United States Post Office on Assembly street, the Colonial Centre Arena, the South Carolina Supreme Court on Gervais street, and the South Carolina Governor’s mansion on Richland street.

In the last few years, the Congaree Vista section of the downtown area of Columbia has been built up by the Congaree River to the west and Assembly street to the east. It is near the Colonial Centre arena, where I used to go to religious conventions with my family in the past.

The Vista today features loft, apartment, and townhouse residences, restaurants and bars, specialty shops and offices. It is one of the newest areas of Columbia. The Columbiana Centre shopping mall is a shopping mecca, and I noticed through the years it’s the same size of malls back home in the upstate, such as Haywood Mall and Westgate mall.

The Columbiana Centre has famous retail stores, such as Belk, JC Penny, and Sears. It is even one of the largest malls in the state.

The next time I’ll be in Columbia will be in the month of October, when I will be attending the South Carolina State Fair. The location of the state fair will be the South Carolina state fairgrounds. The dates of the South Carolina State fair will be October 11 to October 22, 2017. I look forward to seeing you there with my family and friends.
