School Stars

The University of South Carolina recipients of the Stamps scholar award include Luke Marazzo, son of Jane Marazzo and Joseph Marazzo Jr. of Columbia. He is a graduate of Spring Valley High School.

Carolina Scholars include Ian Bain, son of Erin Keefe Bain and Reginald Bain of Columbia, graduate of Irmo High School; Madison Baker, daughter of Stephanie Baker and Gregory Baker of Columbia, graduate of Hammond School; Andrew Bennett, son of Amy Bennett and Charles Bennett of Columbia, graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire; Albert Randolph Hough Jr., son of Catherine Watt and Randy Hough of Columbia, graduate of Groton School, Groton, Massachusetts; Andrew Walker Jr., son of Elizabeth Walker and Andy Walker of Columbia, graduate of A.C. Flora High School; Lina Saleh, daughter of Zeineb Saleh and Ahmed Saleh of Columbia, graduate of Richland Northeast High School; and Nathan Pavlosky, son of Suzanna Pavlosky and Dimitry Pavlosky of Irmo; graduate of Dutch Fork High School.

Julian Negron Julian Negron Julian Negron, 14 of Lexington has been chosen by JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes ( T1D) research, to join a delegation of children and celebrity advocates in Washington, D.C., at JDRF 2017 Children’s Congress July 24-26.

The delegates will be lobbying their members of Congress to remind them of the vital need to continue supporting T1D research that could reduce the burden of this disease and ultimately find a cure.

These children— ages four to 17, and representing all 50 states—will participate in a number of activities on the Hill, including a Congressional Committee hearing to share personal testimonies that highlight the daily struggles of living with T1D and the need for continued funding for research projects such as the Special Diabetes Program (SDP).

Winners of the National Merit Scholarships include Frederick A. Drescher, Spring Valley High School; Matthew S. McConnell , Spring Hill High School; Addison J. Reeves, Dutch Fork High School; Kara E. Bane, Irmo High School; Daesung J. Chong, Irmo High School; and Kristofer L. Crabtree, Dreher High School.
