The war for independence looked like a lost cause in the South. Loyalist fathers challenged patriot sons, brothers fought each other, and Charleston, the richest city in the colonies, fell to the British in May of 1780. After the Redcoats won battles at The Waxhaws, Camden, Fishing Creek, Monck’s Corner, Blackstocks, and Cowpens, there wasn’t much of a Continental Army left.
