You Can’t Take It With You at Town Theatre

Contributed by Town Theatre

Welcome to the Vanderhof ’s home wherein lives a slightly batty New York City family. Grandpa lives for sheer joy rather than for achievement, ambition, or financial gain. Daughter Penny labors without distinction as a would-be playwright of melodramas while her husband, Paul, spends his days making fireworks in the cellar.

Penny and Paul’s children are also in the nest—a ballerina in her own mind, Essie, and Alice, the “normal” one.

When Alice becomes engaged to the boss’ son at the Wall Street firm where she works, a predictable clash ensues when he brings his uptight parents over to meet the prospective in-laws…one evening before they are supposed to arrive.

Probably the best way to meet this kooky clan and their friends is family-tree style.

The show is under the direction of Milena Herring. Melina returned to direct at Town last season ( A Christmas Story ). Before her return to South Carolina, she had been running a theatre company in New York City for many years.

Jill Peltzman serves as the stage manager; Danny Harrington designed and built the set, and Jillian Carey developed costumes.

Last seen at Town in 1947, we’re glad the Vanderhof family is back! They'll be on stage through February 5 with 8 p.m. shows Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday matinees. Call 803-799- 2510 for tickets or visit www.towntheatre.com.
