Heather Abney Heather Abney Heather Abney, a speech-language therapist at Lewis Greenview Elementary School, struggled with a speech impairment as a child. Because of her experiences, Abney decided to pursue a career in speech therapy to help those with similar challenges.

“My experience with stuttering helped me to understand what it feels like to have trouble talking and know firsthand the frustration that can accompany a communication problem,” says Abney. “What began as an obstacle has definitely proven to be a great opportunity for me to help others with their communication difficulties.”

Abney was one of five finalists for 2013-2014 Richland One Teacher of the Year. As honored as she may be by that recognition, she believes nothing can compare to her work with her students. “My greatest accomplishments in education are the successes I’ve achieved with my students. The true rewards come from their accomplishments.”

Because of her outstanding efforts of helping others, Abney has been selected as an honoree for Richland One’s Employee Spotlight, a monthly feature highlighting district staff for their commitment to the education of students. Staff selected for Richland One’s Employee Spotlight are featured on the Richland One This Week TV show on Richland One TV (Time Warner Cable channel 12) and the district’s website, www.richlandone.org.
