Columbia residents with a flare for music or just a desire to give it a try can dust off the old inst ruments in thei r attics and basements as The Congaree New Horizons Band will be recruiting new members this Monday, January 14 at 7 p.m. at 851 Park Street.

The band started in 2007 and according to its websi te, the group is “dedicated to providing musical experiences and opportunities to senior adul ts in Midlands of South Carolina.”

The si te said the band is already large but there’s always room for more musicians.

“ The band is approximately 80 strong, and members come from all walks of life: teachers, doctors, lawyers, business people, and nurses, even clergymen!”

This Monday the band will be meeting for audi t ions, but the web page states that even beginners with no experience can join the fun as there are several levels of expertise.

“The Congaree NHB program consists of four ensembles: the Congaree Concert Band, the Saluda Shoals Explorer Band, the Beginner Band, and the Crescent Moon Jazz Band,” the site states.

The band’s recent schedules have included Christmas tree lightings and several chamber concer ts. Thei r 2013 schedule should be out soon.

The web page encourages would- be musicians to give the band a whirl and join in the fun.
