Wilson’s triple-double leads Heathwood over Lady ’Hawks

Photo by Jeff Blake/ColumbiaWeddingPhotos.com A’ja Wilson had 30 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 blocks to lead the visiting Heathwood Hall Lady Highlanders past the Hammond Lady Skyhawks 79-45 Tuesday, January 31.

Heathwood (18-1, 6- 0) quickly took control of the contest scoring the first 15 points. Wilson had 11 of those points, and on defense she blocked four shots and altered many others in the period. Hammond (6-14, 0-6) did not score until Chapman Giles hit a jumper with 35 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The second quarter was more competitive. Wilson had 10 points in the second frame for Heathwood, but Cather- ine Herring kept the Lady Skyhawks within shouting distance with eight points. The Lady Highlanders were still able to stretch their lead to 37-20 at the half.

Heathwood pulled away from Hammond in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Skyhawks 25- 8. Victoria Dickerson scored eight of her 12 points in the period, and Wilson had four more blocks to keep Hammond off the board. The Lady Highlanders then cruised to the easy victory.

Photo by Jeff Blake/ColumbiaWeddingPhotos.com In addition to her triple double, Wilson also had six steals and five assists. Chelsea Joseph had 14 points and seven rebounds for Heathwood. Herring ended with 14 points and eight assists, and Caroline Penland contributed 12 points and four assists in the losing effort for Hammond.

Heathwood hosts Cardinal Newman on Friday, February 3. Hammond travels to Florence Christian on Thursday, February 2 before hosting Augusta Christian on Friday.
