The Columbia Star is hypocritical: animal lovers and animal killers

I just would like to express my offense and disgust at the pictures you have published in The Braggin` Board - this last issue took the cake.

Do you not recognize, or care, that there are a lot of animal lovers in the community that your paper reaches? I am thoroughly appalled that you would be so callous. To show these kids that are being brought up to think it’s perfectly fine to kill, maim, and torture animals is expecially offensive.

You think every animal that is shot dies instantly without much suffering? Think again. Many are maimed, then go off somewhere in the woods to die a slow, painful death from blood loss, infection, or being unable to eat. Yes, some are shot in the mouth. Nice image, huh?

I could not believe that you printed a picture of the kid with the deer blood on his face. I thought hunters were “ethical” and “respectful of wildlife.” They are the opposite and those terms are oxymorons when it applies to them. At least I have an outlet to express my feelings.

I feel particularly sorry for kids or old people who are enjoying looking at your paper then are exposed to that. You do realize any true animal lover would be offended by this, I hope.

You are not an animal lover if you hunt. I realize hunting is still popular, unfortunately. Maybe in a hundred years or so people will look back on in as an outdated, barbaric practice.

Oh, and I’m sure there are many things that you would not put in your paper due to not wanting to offend people. You wouldn’t dream of using any kind of racial slur, would you? Show pictures of aborted fetuses or dead people, never! Use anything that could be construed as derogatory to gay people, not these days! So why do you still publish something that is equally offensive to some people, including myself? And believe me, it is.

I was just glad that I intercepted the paper before my own children got a hold of it. We spent the summer watching a family of deer, with three fawns repeatedly show up in our yard. We enjoy feeding them, as well as birds, squirrels, etc.

Hopefully, they were not one of the victims you showed. I think it is very sad that people kill animals to make them feel like some kind of big person. You are reinforcing that by publishing this.

These people can get their jollies by watchinig hunting shows or buying hunting magazines. You don’t have to put that c--- in a community newpaper that eveyone has access to.

If you continue to do this, please don’t put it in the sports section; it is anything but. Please tell me how sitting in a tree stand, putting corn out to attract deer, waiting for one who is doing nothing but walking along, then shooting it, is sport? If the victim is a person, we call it murder or assassination.

Please stick with football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc., which are real sports with an equal playing field. One last thing, do you realize how hypocritical you are being. In one issue you may have an article on the wonderful Carolina Wildlife Care, where kind-hearted people work countless hours trying to save lives of birds, squrrels, and other animals, some of whom have been maimed by hunters that you are celebrating. You can’t have it both ways. Please decide if you are animal-friendly or not. I want to know if I should continue to pick up your papers when I see it or not. just an average citizen
