Continuing the legacy of excellence in Richland Two, Kelly Mill Middle and Blythewood High schools, are finalists for the Palmetto's Finest Schools Award. Both schools were finalists last year. The 2011- 2012 winners will be announced during a ceremony Tuesday, March 27, in Columbia at the Koger Center for the Arts.

“Our teachers’ quest to ignite a thirst for knowledge and inspire their students every day is reflected in the selection of Kelly Mill Middle and Blythewood High schools as finalists for this year’s Palmetto’s Finest Awards,” said Superintendent Dr. Katie Brochu.

The prestigious award is sponsored by Carolina First bank and the S.C. Association of School Administrators (SCASA) and is presented each year to two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school that offer the best in innovative, effective educational programs. The Palmetto’s Finest Award is celebrating its 34th year and is one of the most coveted and respected awards among educators. Winners receive a plaque and statewide recognition. The application process considers elements of student achievement, faculty training, program goals and teaching quality, community involvement, and office practices. Schools also were the recipients of on-site examinations.

Richland Two is home to 14 Palmetto’s Finest schools; two schools have won the award twice. Killian Elementary School earned the distinction two years ago. In 2004, two schools, Bookman Road Elementary and Ridge View High School, took home the award.
